Going Scorched Earth + The Creative Slow Burn
We finally got a break in the weather this week so on "my desk" (a portable desk we keep for outside filming) - Ray and I decided to take the opportunity to film some a video about how we grow Forsythia from cuttings. It's always interesting to see how we do this stuff (and many people ask us about it!) so I thought I'd share.
We got the desk from Ray's mom because she wasn't using it and it's really become such a little workhorse for us. I use it outside on our front porch with my laptop or sometimes even as a photography backdrop because it's just so lightweight and portable!
We have a MASSIVE forsythia bush in our front yard, so we've been working on getting it propagated so that eventually the whole property will have a natural forsythia border.
While we were out working, I also noticed that we have a new weed I will need to add to our plant database - American Burnweed.
Apparently it's a natural air purifier and it grows in "scorched earth conditions" which I find very fitting because there's been many times I've gone the metaphorical "scorched earth" so I think I will keep this guy and leave him be. My PSU master gardening friends would probably disagree but symbolically I couldn't imagine a better plant to grow in my front yard.
Scorched earth is how I've felt about websites for awhile now, so it's also very fitting that this week I'm working on making this website be better organized so you can find everything easier. There is a LOT here - and I still have 3-4 more websites of content to import when I get around to it!
I can't even begin to tell you how much I've done this week on the site, but it involved learning Handlebars, which is how Ghost Themes are built. I've also gotten into some complex Ghost routing and yaml files which is fun. I won't bore you with the details but I am so thankful I have 27+ years web development experience, that makes all of this a lot easier.
I'm not sure when we will have the Forsythia video up, but we did publish a cute short today of Taco hiding.
There's always so much going on around here and there's definitely more I could write but my goal in this new series of what's on my desk Wednesdays is to just share what I'm currently focused on for any given Wednesday.
It's also very hard to fit a brimming full creative life into neat tidy website categories, but we will get there. For now I'm just happy with my new articles page that shows you the latest content without it being cluttered by my weekly update posts and cat photos!
Redesigning this site and looking at my whole life's work of content makes me remember what really matters - and it's okay to slow down! We don't need to fire away on all cylinders all the time, we can just slowly simmer and remember to take life one day at a time - that's how the best creative ideas grow anyways!
